Mathematics is not limited to numerical calculations, formulas, and classroom exercises; it is also a powerful means of developing problem-solving skills. Problem solving requires individuals to understand a situation, identify relevant information, select appropriate strategies, perform logical operations, evaluate possible solutions, and communicate conclusions. These abilities are useful not only in mathematics but also in education, employment, personal finance, technology, business, and everyday decision-making. The National Council of Teachers of Mathematics has emphasized problem solving as both an important goal of mathematics learning and a major means through which mathematical understanding develops. (Departemen Matematika) Recent research also emphasizes problem formulation, representation, reasoning, and the use of digital tools as important dimensions of mathematical problem solving. (Springer Nature Link) This paper examines the relationship between mathematics and problem-solving skills. It discusses the meaning and characteristics of mathematical problem solving, major stages involved in solving a problem, the importance of logical reasoning, the role of arithmetic, algebra, geometry, statistics, and probability, and the relevance of mathematical problem solving in everyday life. The paper also examines classroom approaches that can strengthen problem-solving abilities, including real-life problems, collaborative learning, problem posing, mathematical games, and appropriate use of technology. Research on informal mathematics suggests that connecting mathematical concepts with real-world situations can help learners recognize mathematics outside the classroom. (Frontiers) The paper argues that effective mathematics education should move beyond memorization of procedures and provide learners with opportunities to understand, explore, formulate, and solve meaningful problems. The study concludes that mathematical problem solving is an essential intellectual and practical skill that contributes to independent thinking, decision-making, creativity, and lifelong learning.
