The issue of sustainable development has received considerable attention from both developed and developing countries. It has therefore become one of the most important contemporary approaches to achieving economic and social development while preserving the environment and natural resources for future generations. A country's ability to achieve sustainable development hinges on its possession of significant natural and human resources, as well as its considerable potential in the field of renewable energy, particularly solar and wind energy. However, Algeria faces several obstacles, most notably its dependence on hydrocarbons, high unemployment, water scarcity and pollution. Therefore, achieving sustainable development requires economic diversification, agricultural and industrial development, the exploitation of renewable energy sources, waste recycling, and a transition towards a green economy.
This article therefore focuses on the most significant natural and economic obstacles hindering sustainable development, while highlighting key strategic alternatives.
